Are you prepared for an emergency? If you do not have a basement, your garage is the next logical spot to be used as a command center for emergency situations. Remember, preventative measures are key to surviving a disaster! Here are a few essentials to keep in your garage in case of an emergency.

First-Aid Kit

Whether you have a minor cut or deep wound, a first-aid kit is a must. Keep a Red Cross approved first-aid kit in your garage. Make sure it is easy to access! You never know when an emergency will occur. A fully stocked first-aid kit will provide quick medical treatment before assistance arrives. Think about making the kit easy to reach for children to access when needed, but also ensure that it is in a dry location that will avoid water damage in the case of a flood.

Flashlight

If a storm causes your power to go out, flashlights can provide light until electricity returns. Be sure to keep more than one flashlight in your garage and don’t forget the extra batteries! Flashlights can also come in handy for other situations, such as checking the fuse box. Candles are another option for light, but the flame can be dangerous and it may not be as safe for children to handle. Make sure your batteries are new or completely charged at least once a month.

Fire Extinguisher

Every home should have a minimum of one fire extinguisher on each floor of the house, and especially in the kitchen. Oftentimes, people may forget that outdoor bonfires can become dangerous and that storying another fire extinguisher in the garage is a good idea. Other tips for fire extinguishers include:

  • Read the directions and be educated on how to properly use it before a fire happens
  • Inform family members where the fire extinguishers are located
  • Check them monthly to ensure they haven’t expired

Food and Water

Extreme weather can cause you and your family to be trapped in your house for days. Be prepared and keep your garage stocked with at least one gallon of water per person, for at least three days and three days worth of non-perishable food. Now you will not have to worry about leaving the house during the next extreme weather incident!
